Nymphing Geometry
The golden rule of nymphing is to set your rig's depth 1.5 times the depth of the water. But what if that's all wrong?
October 2026
I'm sure you've heard to set up your nymphs 1.5 times the depth your fishing. It's akin to the golden rule of nymphing. Yet, there are often days where I don't have to change my setup at all, despite fishing various runs and pools. On these days where you can set and forget your indicator to nymph depth, the 1.5 times depth guideline seems goes away. So, just how much wiggle room do we really have? How flexible is this golden rule? Or should we really be adjusting depth for every new pool?
Get ready for a super nerdy dive: let's re-examine some geometry to explore the relationship between angle, depth, and how well we're covering the vertical column when fishing nymphs. This might be especially interesting for euro-style nymphing when you're actively controlling the angle of presentation when drifting nymphs. But indicator lovers, we cover that here also.
We're going deep into the weeds, but hopefully you'll stick around to see how this all relates to strategies for approaching the water!
